The Ultimate Goal

Those who have gone deeply into Yoga know that it is not really about the ability to do a headstand or any of the other many āsanas. The ultimate goal of yoga is defined by Patanjali in the second and third sūtras of the first pāda of his treatise, entitled Samādhi Pāda.

“Yoga is the complete cessation of thought waves in consciousness.”

tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe’vasthānam||3||

“Then the seer is established in its own essence.”

What these two sūtras mean is that when the mind becomes perfectly still without thought or cognition then there is the realization that in our essence, we are pure consciousness, or as a teacher of mine expressed it, “the Self beholds the Self and realizes that it is the Self.” This is what is meant by the terms “Enlightenment” or “Self-Realization.”

All the limbs of Yoga are for the purpose of bringing about this experience, especially the 7th limb, Dhyāna or meditation, and this begins with…A Steady and Comfortable Posture.
